AQUARIUM FILTRATION ESSENTIALS

New Bioscape Tropic Velocity Filters

If an aquarium has a beating heart – it must be the filtration device. Without filtration and water circulation, the living animals in an aquarium will not survive very long at all. It is the one thing that can restore polluted water to healthy water without a water change. Regardless, over time water changes are also essential for good aquarium maintenance.

The innovation in aquarium filters has been dramatic over the past 50 years. In the 1950-60s the simple box filter did the work in most aquariums in this country. This was followed closely by the under gravel filter, which was hugely popular through the 60s and well into the 1970s. Both of these were driven by air pumps and offering filtration action – also created the benefit of excellent water circulation by their bubbling actions.

Shortly after, we saw the start of water pump driven aquarium filters. Most popular early on was the hang on the back models such as Dynaflo, Biozonic, etc. all out of the USA. These are operated by drawing water through various cartridges or foam blocks. However, as aquariums developed further with complete light hoods included on top – these were replaced with more suitable Canister or Internal power filters – and this is mostly where we are at today, in advanced aquarium filtration methods.

At Pet Pacific, when we decided to develop our own range of power filters, we had 50 years of experience knowing who the best makers were - with the most reliable track records and quality to choose from. Joining our popular Bioscape Tropic Canister Filter range is our just introduced Bioscape Tropic Velocity Internal Power Filters in 5 models, flow rate sizes from 400 litres per hour up to a powerful 2000 litres per hour (BIS160 – 164). As with most of our recent Bioscape Tropic introductions – we wanted to create a point of difference that mattered to the effective filtration workings of the Velocity range.

We did this by adding a four levels of filtration, resulting in 3 stage system, Mechanical, Chemical & Biological, in each size model as follows:

Stage 1 – Thick Black Foam at lower chamber entry point – to trap large debris particles.

Stage 2 – Mesh bag of activated carbon – to help remove all phenols, tannins and ammonia.

Stage 3 - Phosphate pad – removes phosphates that develop from uneaten food, fish waste and plant decay. Phosphates are required for algae to form – hence removing them leads to a mostly algae-free aquarium if the pad is changed regularly.

Stage 4 - Extra Black foam insert as a final extractor of any particles escaping earlier stages.
